MOODBAY – My Thing

I come alive…

Previously, electropop duo Moodbay have done an impressive turn care of solid tunes such as the synth sweeps of ‘Video Games’ and the hypnotic ‘Like Nobody Else’.

Consisting of Alfie Cattell and Anna Stephens, the duo cite influences as diverse as The Weeknd, Portishead, Massive Attack and Christine and the Queens. ‘My Thing’ marks the pair’s latest release, culled from forthcoming EP Somewhere Under The Moon (which is due out later this year). This release also marks a new chapter for Moodbay as they take creative control over their identity, releasing independently for the first time in their career.

‘My Thing’ offers up more of a groove perhaps than on previous outings, broadening Moodbay’s range. Yet Anna Stephens’ soulful vocals are still front and centre, while there’s plenty of subtle electronic flourishes sprinkled across this song that keep the listener’s attention.

Moodbay flag up Daft Punk’s ‘Instant Crush’ and ‘I Feel It Coming’ by The Weeknd (which also featuring Daft Punk) as influences on their new release. It’s not tough to see some of that warm, stylish vibe in the DNA of the new composition, although Moodbay’s distinctive style carries the real weight here. The feel good nature of the song is also given a playful frame care of Declan Creffield’s colourful video.

“‘My Thing’ has a simple message about being your authentic self” according to a statement by the duo, “without caring what others think. Dance and move in your own weird fantastic way and let the music take your body where it needs to go.”

Over their brief existence, Moodbay have won critical acclaim for their music, including being championed by BBC Music (their tunes have been playlisted by the likes of Janice Long and Alex Lester). Meanwhile, on Spotify, Moodbay have clocked up over 101K listeners in 76 countries. On the basis of effective electropop such as ‘My Thing’, it’s not tough to see why the duo are attracting attention.

‘My Thing is out now.
