London electro clubnight Bedsitland celebrated its second birthday at The Buffalo Bar in Highbury Corner with a live set by THE MODERN.
Now, any band that has a keyboardist named Chi is fine in The Electricity Club’s book but primarily playing a set of new material, they showed the promise that was evident when they supported HEAVEN 17 at The Scala in late 2005.
Back then, they were along with PROTOCOL, part of the highly promising wave of neo-Romo electropop acts following on from Electroclash. Their brilliant debut single ‘Jane Falls Down’ took the best of New Romantic thrill, combining it with a tight Stephen Hague production and a big reverberating bassline.
Despite a false start with various record company hassles and the inevitable difficulties that came with a name change to MATINEE CLUB for the belated 2008 release of their debut album ‘Modern Industry’, the current positive electro climate may mean a second chance for THE MODERN.
Emma Cooke (who recently appeared in BBC1’s ‘Only Fools & Horses’ prequel ‘Rock & Chips’) and Chi Tudor-Hart plus drummer Rees have remained determined to succeed and bring with them a loyal, glamourous following who enjoyed every minute of tonight’s performance, brightening up the venue on this Friday night. With Emma’s glamourous stage presence and confident vocals added to the dynamic backing, the new songs have with an enjoyable immediacy and are even laid back in places.
Stand-outs among the new songs included opener ‘Oh So Good’ with its interpolation of BLONDIE’s ‘Atomic’, ‘Hear You Calling’ and an electronic take on the Burt Bacharach and Hal David song ‘Baby It’s You’.
They encored with old favourite ‘Discotheque Francais’ before leaving the crowd to enjoy the remainder of the party with a choice of cool electro cuts both old and new by DJs Electric Dream, Magenta Placenta and Wiggy Stardust.
All in all, a welcome return for THE MODERN and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for them.
With thanks to Tracy McKenzie
