New Singles Round-up
featuring RUSTY EGAN presents SHOCK, BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT, AU REVOIR SIMONE and MIRRORS
Blitz icon RUSTY EGAN presents SHOCK in this subtle 21st Century makeover of his cult electronic masterpiece R.E.R.B.
Recorded and co-written thirty years ago with producer Richard James Burgess (R.E. is Rusty Egan, R.B. is Richard Burgess˙hence the title!), this was originally a B-Side for the New Romantic dance troupe who spawned Tik & Tok and Cherie Blair's controversial 'lifestyle guru' Carole Caplin. R.E.R.B.
is the Sci-Fi sound of Cerrone's Supernature reconstructed around a mechanised Glitter Band beat.
Seasoned with Roland System 100M programming and thumping prototype Simmons drums fills, this magnificent instrumental hasn't dated at all and sounds terrifically contemporary. Having remixed Filthy Dukes' Messages and more recently Fade To Grey
, RUSTY EGAN has coutured a new 2010 version which still captures the chunky synths, piano runs and electro grooves of the original. And for those who crave the 1980 original, it's conveniently on the flip! R.E.R.B. 2010
is released as a 12 inch single via Blitz Club Records on 13th September 2010 with downloads available at the usual online outlets shortly after.
BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT is Welsh singer/songwriter Rod Thomas whose self-confessed guilty pleasure is Ace Of Base! On new offering Love Part II, Rob takes the template of Bizarre Love Triangle
and gives it a bit of a sensitive 'new man' outlook. Let's face it, New Order did disco music for football hooligans but what Love Part II
takes BLT back to its less macho Italo roots.
Shimmering transistorised strings, pulsing Euro-sequences and a rousing chorus make this a very immediate slice of quality pop. "A strong hint that life might not be a total waste of time after all, delivered in three minutes and forty two seconds" it says on the sleeve! Following supporting The Sound Of Arrows, BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT will be Ellie Goulding's special guest on her Autumn tour. Love Part II
is out on 13th September 2010 through Popjustice Hi-Fi Virgin Records.
Brooklyn trio AU REVOIR SIMONE's most recent single Tell Me
gets a belated mention by virtue of some marvellous remixes by VILLA NAH and MIRRORS. As quite a bare, almost half instrumental track on their album Still Night, Still Light
, it was always open to many a remixer's interpretation.
VILLA NAH's rework makes it to vinyl and is a laid back electro-latin lounge affair which is bright and breezy in keeping with AU REVOIR SIMONE's wispy 'girls next door' demeanour. But taking the song in totally the opposite direction is MIRRORS' Un Autre Monde remix which is available exclusively as a download from Juno Records and recrafts Tell Me
into a dense apocalyptic number for the perfect death disco! Annie, Erika and Heather sound delectably suicidal! Tell Me
is available now in a variety of remixes on Moshi Moshi Records
And talking of MIRRORS, the smart Brighton quartet have a brilliant new single Ways To An End. Synthetic chill and pulsing effects dominate this uptempo 16 beat number. Counting Kraftwerk style "1-2-3-4-5", this combination of Talking Heads' percussive drama and The Horrors' indie claustrophobia is a lively introduction to this promising young band's dark intelligent electro pop.
The flipside Broken By Silence is moodier but still has all the gorgeous pop noir one has grown to expect from MIRRORS with bright melodic lines to keep it dreamy and uplifting despite the inherent gloom. It harks back to the days when an A-side was only as good as its B-side. Ways To An End
b/w Broken By Silence is released by Skint Records on 23rd August 2010.
