Although 2011 saw the release of the out takes collection ‘Dead Son Rising’, ‘Splinter’ is Numan’s first full length album project since the rather one dimensional ‘Jagged’. The album features NINE INCH NAILS guitarist Robin Finck and is produced by long-standing collaborator Ade Fenton.
Among the tracks on ‘Splinter’, there’s some menacing orchestral experimentation on ‘Here In The Black’ and ‘The Calling’ while after the artistic success of downtempo numbers such as ‘Not The Love We Dream Of’ on ‘Dead Son Rising’, there will be subtler but no less unsettling moments such as ‘Lost’, ‘Where I Can Never Be’ and ‘My Last Day’.
But of course, there will be heavier monsters in the shape of ‘Who Are You?’ and the haunting growl of ‘Love Hurt Bleed’. With ‘I Am Dust’, signs are that ‘Splinter’ will be more dynamic and anthemic than its predecessor with dubdrops and spaces that provide the much needed variation that was missing from ‘Jagged’. Certainly, with its Arabic overtones, ‘I Am Dust’ is an impressive calling card for the reinvigorated LA based Numan.
‘Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind)’ is released on 14th October 2013 by Mortal Records
